What is an ITIN?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for individuals who are required to have a US taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).
Think of it as a personal tax ID for foreign nationals. It's a 9-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a range of 70-88, 90-92, or 94-99 in the fourth and fifth positions.
Why Get an ITIN?
An ITIN is not required to form an LLC or get an EIN, but it opens doors that are otherwise closed to non-residents:
- Banking access — Many US banks are more willing to open accounts when you have an ITIN. It removes the "non-resident" friction and can serve as proof of identity.
- PayPal and payment processors — PayPal requires an SSN or ITIN for US business accounts. Without one, you're locked out.
- Form 5472 filing — While you can file Form 5472 without an ITIN, having one simplifies the process and avoids potential IRS correspondence.
- US tax compliance — If you have US-source income or need to file a US tax return, an ITIN is required.
- Credit history — An ITIN allows you to start building a US credit history, which can be useful for business financing down the road.
Why Use Our Service?
The DIY Problem: Applying for an ITIN yourself means completing IRS Form W-7, gathering certified copies of your identification documents, and mailing everything to the IRS. Processing takes 7-11 weeks, and any mistakes mean your application gets rejected and you start over.
Our Solution: We prepare your W-7 form, review your supporting documents, and submit everything to the IRS correctly the first time.
| Method | Timeline | Risk of Rejection |
|---|---|---|
| DIY (Mail to IRS) | 7-11 weeks | High |
| Our Service | 7-11 weeks | Low |
Note: The IRS processing time is the same regardless of how you apply — there's no way to speed up the IRS. The value of our service is getting it right the first time so you don't face rejections and delays.
Requirements
To apply for an ITIN, you need:
- Valid passport — certified copy or original (we'll advise on the best approach)
- Completed Form W-7 — we prepare this for you
- Tax return or exception documentation — depending on your situation, you may need a federal tax return or documentation showing why you qualify for an exception
Already have a US LLC? If you're filing Form 5472, you can apply for an ITIN at the same time by attaching Form W-7 to your tax return.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an ITIN to form an LLC or get an EIN?
No. You can form an LLC and get an EIN without an ITIN. An ITIN is a personal tax ID, while an EIN is a business tax ID — they serve different purposes.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
The IRS typically processes ITIN applications in 7-11 weeks. There is no expedited option. We ensure your application is complete and correct to avoid rejections that would restart the clock.
Can I apply for an ITIN alongside my Form 5472?
Yes, and this is often the most efficient approach. When you file your annual Form 5472 with a pro forma 1120, you can attach Form W-7 to apply for an ITIN at the same time.
Do I need to send my original passport to the IRS?
Not necessarily. You can use a certified copy from your country's embassy or consulate, or have your passport certified by an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA). We'll guide you through the best option for your situation.
Will my ITIN expire?
ITINs that haven't been used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive tax years will expire. If your ITIN expires, you can apply to renew it.
