I don’t use Airwallex personally, but several of my clients do — and their experience has been positive. The onboarding is straightforward, and the approval rate for non-resident LLC owners is good. If you’ve been rejected by Mercury or need broader multi-currency coverage than Wise offers, Airwallex is worth looking at.
What is Airwallex?
Airwallex was founded in Melbourne in 2015 as a payments platform for businesses that operate across borders. They’ve grown into a full global business account — multi-currency wallets, local payment details, corporate cards, and international transfers.
Think of it as sitting between Wise Business (great for transfers, limited account features) and Mercury (great US banking, USD only). Airwallex tries to do both.
Key Features
Local Account Details in 60+ Countries
This is Airwallex’s standout feature. You get local bank details for collecting payments in major markets — US, UK, EU, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and many more. That’s broader coverage than Wise (22 currencies) or Mercury (USD only).
Your clients pay you locally in their currency. No international wire fees for them, and you receive the money faster.
Multi-Currency Wallet
Hold balances in 46+ currencies. Convert between them at competitive exchange rates. This is useful if you invoice in multiple currencies and want to time your conversions.
Borderless Cards
Virtual and physical Mastercard cards with:
- No foreign transaction fees
- Draws directly from your multi-currency wallet
- Employee expense cards with spending controls
- Works with Apple Pay and Google Pay
International Payments
Send payments to 150+ countries. Useful for paying contractors, suppliers, or transferring to your own accounts in other countries.
Who Is Airwallex Best For?
Airwallex fits a specific niche:
- Businesses collecting payments from many countries — The 60+ local account details are unmatched
- E-commerce businesses — Collect from marketplaces and payment processors in local currency
- Businesses rejected by Mercury — Airwallex has a broader appetite for international businesses
- Teams needing expense cards — Corporate cards with controls and approval workflows
Limitations
- Less established than Mercury or Wise — Smaller user base, less community knowledge
- Not FDIC insured — Similar to Wise, it’s a fintech platform, not a bank
- Pricing can be complex — Varies by volume and use case. Contact them for specifics
- No credit card product — Debit cards only (like Wise, unlike Mercury)
- Less suited as a primary US bank — If you primarily need a US checking account, Mercury is simpler
Airwallex vs. Other Options
| Feature | Airwallex | Mercury | Wise Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local account details | 60+ countries | USD only | 22 currencies |
| Currencies | 46+ | USD only | 40+ |
| FDIC insured | No | Yes (up to $5M) | No |
| Credit card | No | IO card (1.5% cashback) | No |
| Physical card | Yes (no FX fees) | Yes | Yes |
| International payments | 150+ countries | Free wires (SHA) | Low-fee transfers |
| Best for | Multi-country collection | Primary US banking | FX transfers |
How to Open an Account
- Apply online at airwallex.com
- Submit business documents — LLC formation docs, EIN, passport
- Verify your identity — Standard KYC process
- Get approved — Typically within a few business days
The onboarding process is fairly simple, and from what my clients report, the approval rate for non-resident LLC owners is good.
Our Verdict
Airwallex is a solid option if you need to collect payments in many countries or if Mercury hasn’t worked out for you. The 60+ local account details are its strongest feature — neither Mercury nor Wise can match that coverage.
For most non-resident LLC owners, I still recommend starting with Mercury (primary US bank) + Wise Business (international payments). But if your business has heavy multi-country payment collection needs, Airwallex deserves a look.
